REMEMBER / KUJTO

#exhibition open from 21 January to 3 February 2021
Opening ceremony: 21 January at 17:00
Memory Day: 27.01.2022 at 11:00

75 million people died in the Second World War, including around 20 million military personnel and 40 million civilians, many of whom died as a result of deliberate genocide, massacres, mass bombings, disease and starvation. The Nazis, as part of a deliberate programme of extermination, systematically killed over 11 million people, including 6 million Jews. Between '33 and '45, the Nazis and their allies established more than 44,000 camps and other places of imprisonment (including ghettos).

Of the 197,000 people who entered the Mauthausen camp between 1938 and 1945, at least 95,000 people died there. More than 512 Albanians were interned in concentration camps. They were sent to Zemun, Banjica and then to other camps in Austria and Germany. 427 Albanians died across all the Mauthausen camps; only 24 survived when the Allies liberated the camp on 5 May 1945. One of them emigrated to the USA, while the other 23 returned alive to Albania. To another hell.

From the exhibition's curator, Elton Koritari: – “For memory to have meaning, it is important that people understand what happened from a historical point of view. Furthermore, we must show that there exists a civil, peaceful, democratic and unbreakable barrier of society, of individuals and of course of institutions, that cannot forget, and at the same time cannot tolerate any longer the conditions for the repetition of history.

Primo Levi said: – “It happened, therefore it can happen again: this is the core of what we have to say.” We must say forcefully that whenever even a single person is discriminated against or persecuted because of their identity, skin colour, origin, social class, religion, sexual orientation or origin, history repeats itself once again.

It must never happen again!”
