Tirana Castles

“Tirana Castles – A Guide for Children and Adults” makes it possible to get to know the castles and fortresses of the city of Tirana as objects of our Cultural Heritage. These guides exist in two forms: physical and digital.
All the drawings and illustrations for the guides were created through the involvement of young artists, under the guidance of an academic staff made up of archaeologists, historians and educators. Everything is designed to make participation easy in an inclusive way, for children as well as adults. Click the button below and get to know us better. In the meantime, enjoy your visit to this castle too!

Tirana Castles and Fortresses is a project that aims to bring the city's cultural heritage closer to younger generations through an educational, artistic and contemporary approach. At its core lies the idea of actively involving children and young people in getting to know, studying and promoting the castles and fortresses of Tirana, as part of our historical and cultural identity.
The guides, produced in physical and digital format, thus create a long-lasting, accessible and reproducible tool for schools, families and institutions. These guides are not only informational materials, but teaching tools that combine history, art, geography and the social sciences, encouraging spatial orientation, critical thinking and reflection on the value of heritage.
Through professional documentation with photography and video, the project also gains an important archival and awareness-raising dimension, especially for sites at risk of deterioration or inaccessible to the public. Castles such as Dorëz, Prezë, Petrelë, Ndroq or the ruins of Dajti and Persqop are treated not only as historical monuments, but as spaces for education and intergenerational dialogue.

An essential component of the project is the combination of traditional media with digital technology. Digitising the guides makes further implementation possible on the web, in apps or in other interactive forms, supporting the transition of the “digital native” generation toward conscious and proactive citizenship. In this way, the project does not remain simply a publication, but becomes a replicable model for managing and communicating cultural heritage.

The project extends into a series of activities that turn it into a living, interactive process. Workshops with art students and creative workshops with children of different age groups create concrete spaces for collaboration, where knowledge is built through direct experience. In this way, the involvement of artists, educators, researchers, and media and technology professionals becomes a real platform for interdisciplinary collaboration.
At its core, “Tirana Castles – A Guide for Children and Adults” represents a long-term investment in cultural and civic education. The project strengthens the sense of identity, cultivates a sense of responsibility toward heritage, and encourages lifelong learning. By building bridges of communication between generations and making history tangible and understandable for children and young people, it lays new foundations for a healthier and more conscious relationship with the history and the space we live in.
This project is organised by the MeWe Association and EJAlbum, with the support of the Municipality of Tirana.
